Kathleen Weich

"My aim is not to present a finalized view of a given subject. I hope to offer a place where you can contemplate and bring your own visions." - Kathleen Weich

Kathleen Weich (1957-2011) was born in Victoria, B.C. She studied Visual Arts at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton (1985-1987) before moving to Toronto, where she continued her studies at York University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1990.

Weich's paintings are based on the abstract notions of landscape. Using a conceptual approach rather than representing a more traditional landscape, she was able to take more liberties with the subject matter, colour and paint. Taking from city and rural images whether imagined or real, Weich used different views as a tool for composition, giving her space to use colour. Her vibrant works have been exhibited by leading galleries across Canada.

The Kathleen Weich Bursary in Visual Art at York University was established in 2011 and is awarded annually to a full time undergraduate BFA student majoring in Visual Art.
