Born in a small town of rural Australia in 1983, West's love for photography began at the age of seven when his mother, acquiesced to his pleas for a 35mm camera.
His ambitions to follow photography developed in the high school darkroom before continuing his study at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. In West’s graduating year, he claimed Gold and Silver distinctions along with the runner up award for prints in the annual Australian Professional Photographers association awards.
Fabricate, West’s most recent series, claimed first and second place awarding him photographer of the year in the 2008 International Aperture Awards. In the same year West was also chosen to exhibit in Cannes as part of Saatchi and Saatchi’s collection of the worlds top 100 emerging photographers.
In 2010, West was the winner of the highly acclaimed IV International Arte Laguna Prize in Venice, Italy, along with a several Lucie Award commendations and the February launch of ‘Blanc’. Later in the year, Dean will also be unveiling his latest project, an 8 image traveling exhibition which see all corners of the globe including destinations among Europe, USA, Canada and Australia.
