With much anticipation I arrived in the picturesque beach town of Porto Recanati, Italy, home to my sister Virginia, her husband Pierluigi, and my one month old niece Gianna. They just moved into a new apartment, and with a newborn and a posse of Canadian visitors, the two have had no time to decorate their place. So, although not a single piece of art was actually hung on the walls, their collection was placed throughout, creating personality and warmth in their new home.
Last Sunday morning I made my way to a loft in the west end, home to Edward Griffith and Tamara Robbins Griffith, Managing Editor of Style at Home. While I cradled their eleven week old kitten, Winston, in my arms, Tamara gave me a tour of their chic and cozy home. Her passion for art and design is evident in every detail of their stylish space.
Graphic and playful artworks animate the walls in Lisa and Shira's sons' bedrooms. Animal and transportation themed pieces and bright abstract works create a wonderful environment for homework and play. (And play we did. After shooting Shira's house early this week I found myself losing terribly to her son in an intense toy car racing game…)
I would have dreamed to have grown up in these rooms, surrounded by pretty paintings, silkscreens, antique etchings, and bright abstract works. Art Interiors' owners Lisa and Shira have filled their daughters' bedrooms with original artworks that are sweet and whimsical. Far from childlike, these pieces will eventually find their way on dorm room walls, and in first homes.
It is incredibly refreshing to witness how certain clients view art as an essential part of their everyday lives. Heather and Peter's passion for art and collecting challenges the notion of art as the “finishing touch” in the decorating process. Paintings are the main focus in their home, and with tons of artworks in storage, and leaning against the walls, their space has the air of a gallery (though much brighter and cozier).
