the artist's studio

Richard Herman has been with Art Interiors since the very beginning, so it was particularly thrilling to see the space where his serene landscapes and meditative abstracts are realized. His studio is small but inviting. In his words: “I've worked in this space for 15 years, so it is well worn and feels like home.”
Earlier this week, I found refuge from a rainy afternoon in Elizabeth Lennie's home and charming attic studio. Warming up over tea and homemade cookies (compliments of her baker daughter), we passed the hours in winding conversation, touching upon everything from Sophia Loren, to the poetics of space, to the Toronto housing market.
My Friday afternoon was spent in Erin Vincent's downtown studio, sifting through antiques, collected ephemera, fabrics, and numerous works of art.
Award-winning photographer, Peter Andrew, has a dream studio in an industrial/residential neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous to shoot Andrew's space, as I had yet to photograph one of our photographers, and felt that the pressure was on. But Andrew eased my fears immediately. Not only did he lend me a very impressive looking flash, but he even pre-selected which photographs were the strongest.
I had the great pleasure of visiting Danielle again, but this time it was at her live/work space that she shares with her partner, artist/industrial designer Mahmood Popal. Their space exudes creativity and is filled with works of art, art supplies, sculptures, books, antiques, heirlooms and found objects. There was so much to talk about that I could have spent the whole night in the company of these two laid-back, talented, and prolific artists.
